Why Does A Locksmith Drill Through A Lock

If you are locked out of your property and call a locksmith, the first thing that the locksmith will do is try non-destructive ways of getting the door open. Not all locks are created equal. Generally the cheaper the lock, the easier it is to pick, particularly with the right skillset and specialist equipment. High-security locks, such as ASSA ABLOY Protec and Evva, are high-end locks, and it is not practical or cost-effective to try and pick these locks, as they have been designed specifically to offer the higher level of security to resist picking. Additionally, sometimes a lock will malfunction or could be vandalised in a way which means you cannot open it, even when you have the key.

How Does Lock Drilling Work

Lock drilling involves drilling through the lock cylinder itself, destroying the cylinder while leaving the lock mechanism itself intact. Assuming that the lock can be drilled, however, it is a fairly primitive technique for breaching the door. Most locks can be bypassed with a drill bit. The goal is to drill off the pins that are in the lock, using a small drill bit. The locksmith will drill a hole straight through those pins, allowing the cylinder plug to rotate and open the door.

Doing this makes the lock essentially useless, so it should be a last resort, performed only if other methods such as picking do not work. If you have a relatively inexpensive lock, then it is highly unlikely that a locksmith will want to drill it unless the lock has been severely damaged in some way. For more advanced, high-security locks, strategically drilling the lock is often the only option unless you are willing to invest a lot of time into working the lock open, which may not end up working.
