Organised gangs stealing high end Toyotas in Brisbane – how to protect your vehicle and fleet

Australian residential street with cars parked outside homes

Organised gangs in Brisbane are using hi tech tools to steal late model Toyota LandCruisers and RAV4s from driveways in just a few minutes, often without even touching the house. While these incidents are centred in Brisbane, they are a warning for Toyota and 4WD owners across Queensland. The Courier Mail reported almost 50 Toyota Landcruiser and RAV4s were reported stolen in Brisbane between 20 October and 12 November 2025, worth up to $5 million in just three weeks.

How thieves are getting away with it

These are not old fashioned “smash a window and hotwire it” thefts. Criminals are using a small electronic device that can talk directly to the car’s computer network. By accessing wiring in the door, rear quarter or even the headlights, they can send fake commands that unlock the doors and start the engine without a key.

In several Brisbane cases, thieves simply walked up the street, made a small cut, plugged in their device and drove away. They then disabled factory tracking and alarms and removed anything that could identify the owner.

Why this is a problem beyond Brisbane

Once a technique like this works in one city, it rarely stays there. Modern 4WDs and SUVs are valuable, easy to resell and often live outside on the street or in open driveways. That combination makes places like regional Queensland, farming communities and tradie fleets very attractive targets.

Queensland Police and Crime Stoppers campaigns continue to push basic security steps for owners, including:

• Parking behind locked gates or in a garage where possible
• Keeping vehicles within CCTV coverage
• Using steering wheel locks, pedal locks or lockable bollards
• Considering alarms, immobilisers and GPS tracking

These measures do not make a vehicle impossible to steal, but they increase effort and risk, which often sends thieves looking for an easier target.

What you can do for business

Business vehicles are often prime targets. Dual cabs and LandCruisers loaded with tools are worth a lot more than their purchase price.

If you run a fleet of utes, vans or 4WDs, it is worth thinking about layered security:

• Secure businesses with quality locks, alarms and monitored CCTV.
• Secure vehicle keys in a lockable cabinet or safe, not left on hooks in the office.
• Install GPS tracking on all fleet vehicles so you can see where they are 24/7.
• Set up alerts if a vehicle moves outside work hours or leaves a defined area (geo fencing).

High quality GPS tracking will not always stop a theft, but it can:

• Give you real time location to pass to police
• Show movement history and where factory tracking was disabled
• Help confirm whether an incident is a genuine theft for insurance
• Improve day to day fleet management and driver safety at the same time
