WHAT IS A PET-FRIENDLY ALARM SYSTEM?

It is a common misconception that having pets and home security systems in the same house is impossible. There is always the fear that our furry friends will unintentionally cause a false alarm.

A pet-friendly alarm system is one that is smart enough to distinguish between the movements of you and your pets to prevent false alarms. This is especially useful if you have a lot of pets or a large dog. But, how do pet-friendly alarms work? Is it the best option for you? And what should you know about pet-friendly alarm systems?

1. HOW PET-FRIENDLY ALARMS WORK?

The only difference between pet-friendly alarm systems and standard systems is the type of motion sensor used. Pet-friendly versions use passive infrared motion sensors (PIRs) that are specifically designed to ignore any motion or changes in body heat up to a certain weight. They usually work effectively with most household pets up to 35 kg. Subsequently, the sensors will only activate if they detect larger heat movements such as humans.

Some pet-friendly PIR sensors can distinguish between you and your pets by analysing your movement patterns in addition to your size. These features work great at reducing false alarms, but they’re not a perfect solution. If your pet likes to jump wildly around the house or at the window, you may experience some issues. It does, however, reduce the possibility of the alarm being triggered compared to standard PIR’s.

2. DO THEY WORK WITH LARGER PETS?

Some alarm systems may make allowances for larger breads with selectable sensitivities. You can safely set your security sensors to ignore any movement made by pets that weigh less than 35 kg up to around 60 kg.

The less sensitive you set your PIR sensors, the more likely they will ignore a potential threat. For this reason, we recommend asking a security company like Rechenberg about which sensors will work best for your pet.

If PIR sensors don’t work with your pet, you can consider other security devices such as door or window sensors. These devices work by using a reed switch and a magnet. It will only activate the alarm once they lose close proximity to each other. These can be used with glass break detectors that listen for glass breaking sounds, indicating forced entry to your home.

3. WHY SHOULD I INVEST IN PET FRIENDLY DETECTORS?

Pet-friendly alarm systems are an excellent investment for pet owners who want to improve their home security for both themselves and their furry friends. They are definitely worth it to reduce the possibility of false triggers by your pet while maintaining the security of your home.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS FOR PET-FRIENDLY ALARM SYSTEMS:

Always have a professional install your security equipment. This has numerous advantages, such as confirming it works correctly, convenience, and monitoring. But what does having pets have to do with proper security system installation?

If your alarm is poorly installed, even if it has pet-friendly sensors, minor disturbances like curtains and pets walking into a room can easily set it off. Sometimes it takes an experienced hand to balance the sensitivity of your sensors and manage your security needs.

Positioning your detectors to avoid potential interference from your pets can be difficult. Our security specialists are experts at installing alarms away from curious paws.
